The Best Dog Breeds to Own for Staying Active and Healthy
A dog can be a great motivator to keep you in shape. It forms a strong bond with you and your animal, it’ll be great for both of you. The above breeds are just some of the dogs who are going to want more than a walk.
Consider the decision carefully, a dog is a long commitment after all, but in the end, there’s no finer companion while you’re running, hiking, or generally enjoying getting outside of the home.
A dog that helps promote an active lifestyle is a great pet, so if you’re in the market to keep in shape while enjoying some canine company, then read on to see some of the best breeds to keep you moving.
The Border Collie is famously one of the most intelligent breeds on the planet. However, intelligence in dogs actually means that they require a lot more exercise than most other canines just to keep them from inventing their own “exciting” games around the house in your absence.
Unlike some of the other highly intelligent breeds of dog which are out there, Border Collies are also extremely agile and have high endurance levels. This makes them a great companion for hiking and jogging.
They also consistently score highly in agility trials and other dog sports, so you can even turn their high energy levels and prize-winning personality into an award-winning animal with the right training.
If you’re trying to stay active and want a doggo to accompany you on the journey then a Border Collie may be exactly the companion you’ve been looking for this entire time.
Dobermans are a bit intimidating but the breed is actually a friendly, active dog when they’re raised properly. Properly socialized they’re able to participate in any dog sport, they make great running or hiking partners, and just testing the limits of their intelligence can be an excellent sport for their owners.
Dobermans aren’t suitable for everyone, of course. Training them requires a firm hand and it really is best to raise them from a pup to ensure that they have the right temperament to be an active companion.
Still, while they often find themselves used as police dogs or search and rescue canines they have a place in the right home. Just do your research before you decide to invest in one of these magnificent canines
The Australian Shepherd is actually an American cattle dog despite its name. Because of their high intelligence, friendly demeanor, and generally high energy levels, they’re perfect for those looking to remain active.
Whether it’s a long hike, a jog, or just a vigorous game of fetch you’ll be able to enjoy time with a dog of this breed. They’re also friendly enough that you can take them virtually anywhere dogs are allowed without anyone batting an eye.
Australian Shepherds require a lot of stimulation but for those willing to invest in some serious playtime they’re a godsend.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Corgis, despite their small stature, have a surprisingly athletic demeanor. These unassuming dogs were bred to herd cattle which makes them one of the most intelligent breeds. Like all really active dogs, they require a ton of physical and mental exercise.
They’re not as active as some of the dogs on this list but they’re up for hours of walking or playing, all of which can help you make sure that you’re getting the exercise you need along the way.
So, if something smaller and cuter is to your taste you should consider picking up a Corgi as a companion. They’ll keep you on your toes and you’ll find that they’re amazingly fit creatures when given the space to run that they need.
While they’re not the first thing those who aren’t familiar with them would think of, Dalmatians are amazing companions for those who like to run. They were originally bred to keep pace with horse-drawn carriages… they’ll certainly be able to keep pace with you.
Dalmatians aren’t a passive breed and they can require a firm hand and proper obedience training. If you’re willing to put in the work, however, then you’re in good hands.
Dalmatians are fairly intelligent but mostly they’re bursting at the seams with energy. As a companion for a frequent runner, there aren’t many dogs that compare and their playful nature will win you over as time goes on.
The Weimaraner is an ideal companion for those who like to go running on trails. Their heritage as hunting dogs makes them fast and easily capable of navigating the rough terrain you may run into.
You may want to keep them on a leash, however, since these dogs are also known for their amazingly high prey drive. A simple run can turn into a wild chase if your dog spots a rabbit or squirrel alongside the trail.
They’re highly intelligent and capable of learning some complex tricks as well, with some creativity training sessions that can be great for both of you. Those with the wild in their hearts, however, will find that the Weimaraner is the perfect companion.
The Siberian Husky isn’t suitable as an active dog everywhere. For those in cold climates, these dogs are a fantastic companion, however, able to bear the cold on hikes and jogs while you’re nice and bundled up.
In hotter climates, they can overheat easily, unfortunately, so consider where you’re planning on taking them before you decide they’re the right companion.
That said, they’re highly intelligent and can get into trouble easily when not watched. They’re beautiful but any owner will tell you they’re also rather mischievous. Keep them stimulated or you may be facing some odd problems in the home.

CBD oil is ideal for dogs. The oils help the dog grow with vigor and increased strength and vitality for life because of the natural health impacts it has on the dog.
Personally, I am a huge believer in CBD products.
I first learned about the benefits of CBD (cannabidiol) just this past summer, and have been doing my best to learn even more since then!
Over that time, I have tested quite a few of these products myself. To my surprise, there are a lot of good brands out there!
A while ago I had read that CBD for dogs was a growing fad, but I did not ever think I would try this out myself.
I was wrong!
A couple weeks ago I started to use CBD oil with my sister’s dog Jasper, and it has made a world of difference!
There are many ways that CBD oil for dogs is beneficial, but not as many brands currently making quality CBD for animals.
CBD oil can promote joint health in dogs, especially when you are using a CBD product which uses only 100% natural hemp extract.
Another awesome benefit is that CBD oil contains nutrient-rich Omega-3 and Omega-6 antioxidants, making your dog’s skin and fur look healthier than ever!
CBD is not psychoactive for both humans and dogs, which means your animal cannot develop a dependency to it. Although they may have a better and calmer mood when taking it, they will never experience a “crash” or withdrawal effects!
Compared with other medications for animals, CBD oil is extremely easy to give to them.
The CBD dosage for dogs is certainly less than it is for humans, and you can easily just drop the CBD oil on their food to have them ingest it!
You can also give them drops of CBD oil directly in to their mouth, but putting it on their food is just as effective.
Generally, the CBD dosage for dogs and other dogs seems to be around 2mg to 5mg. Contrarily, the CBD dosage for humans is normally above 15mg.

Unbaked Peanut Butter Dog Treats
For the dog, this is an ideal treat and requires only four ingredients and less time to prepare as it is not baked.
- Peanut butter (1 cup)
- Pumpkin Puree (half a cup)
- Milk (A quarter of a cup)
- Oats (3 cups)
How to Prepare:
Over mild heat, preferably on an electric bowl attached to its plug, mix the butter, pumpkin puree and milk for enough time to properly get a paste of the three products.
Ideally this should be a three minute through beating of the mixture. Once the mixture is well beaten, gradually add 2 cups of oats, while beating to evenly incorporate the oats into the mixture.
Using a scoop, pick out the thick paste and roll it into balls and use the rest of the oats to oat and give the balls extra grip and firmness. The paste is enough to make at least 20 balls of the delicious meal for your dog.
On the bright side, you can store the balls I a fridge for up to one week and thus treat your dog to some every day.
Breath Mint Cookies for Dogs
The breath of our dogs is ultimately important to us as the dogs will want to snuggle or play about with the children. What better way to treat your dog than a freshly baked breath mint for it?
- Whole wheat flour
- Half a cup of freshly chopped parsley
- Half a cup of freshly chopped mints
- An egg
- A quarter cup of water
- 3 tablespoons of extra virgin oil.
How to Prepare:
The oven should be preheat to 325° F
In a bowl, whisk the egg, water oil and the parsley and mint chops. Add the whole wheat flour to the mixture and make dough.
Knead the dough evenly and then place the dough on a surface that is lightly floured to avoid the dough sticking to the surface.
For people who prefer oat flour to whole wheat flour, use the blender to pulse the oats into flour like powder and follow the same process as used with the whole wheat flour.
Flatten the dough to approximately the thickness of cookies using a rolling pin. Take the knife or cookie cutter and cut out 30- 40 pieces of the dough which will make the total number of cookies you are set to bake for the dog.
Place them on a parchment that is non-sticky to dough and ensure about an inch spacing from one cookie to the other. Once ready, place them in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes. The end result should be freshly baked golden brown cookies for your dog.
The cookies must be served once they have cooled down. To store them, use an airtight jar and ensure the cap is well placed. These mints have the capability to take away any foul breath from your dog and make snuggling much more fun.
Coupled with other dental products that can be found at Innovet, the mints are a great way to take away the foul breath but are not ideal for dental care. These two recipes are perfect treats for your dog and are easy to make too.
However, the treats are not completely exhaustive. At Innovet, there are Hemp Chews too, that are great recipes too to treat your dog without you going to the kitchen. A combination of these products can keep your dog in the best of moods.
Should You Get Fencing for Your Dog?
If you are considering getting a dog because you want a friend to help you stay active, fencing is also a good idea. Although you can always go walk or jog in your neighborhood, having an enclosed area is great for playing catch or other games with your dog.
If you don’t have a fence for your propertu, electronic dog fences are wireless which is much cheaper alternatives to traditional fences. They do not require lengthy installation sessions, and they do not obstruct your backyard in any way.
Concluding Thoughts – Health Benefits of Having a Dog
In conclusion, I would like to say the benefit of walking is endless for health and to keep it continue you can walk with your dog.
So, your dog will also get benefit from this walk – like when you say hello to someone, your dog will also learn and say hello next time.
Keep in mind that you have to start slowly and continue it to be habituated on this day by day.
