Choosing to use stimulant-free pre-workout supplements instead of pre workout supplements that contain caffeine or other stimulants is a great decision for your overall health, but you still want a pre workout that helps you crush your workout, right?

Fortunately, there are multiple stim-free pre workout ingredients that will be a huge boost to you and your workouts, and there are a few non-stim pre workout supplements (some that I’ve already tried) that can give you as much energy as the pre workout supplements you might be used to!

Simply put, the main job of any pre workout supplement is to provide you with energy to have a better workout than you normally would. However, there are a variety of ways that pre workout supplements can provide you energy.

The reason to choose a stimulant free pre workout supplement is simple: although it is safe to consume moderate amounts of caffeine, drinking pre workout products with a large amount of caffeine can have negative effects on your health.

Unlike stim-free pre-workouts, pre workout supplements that contain stimulants will fatigue your adrenal glands and have many harmful side-effects that go along with their ability to help make your workouts more effective.

According to a study which was published in Advances in Integrative Medicine,

“adrenal fatigue is a common stress-related disorder in which the symptoms are strongly influenced by circulating cortisol levels. Although adrenal fatigue has appeared in the medical literature by various names for over 100 years, its prevalence is just now coming to the forefront. Healthcare professionals can make a dramatic difference by monitoring patients’ health to check for signs and symptoms of adrenal fatigue.”

The good news is that there are many other ingredients that can replace caffeine or other common stimulants!

Although many people do not know about the energy-increasing and fatigue-fighting ingredients in stim-free pre workouts, there are many options for caffeine free pre workouts!

What are the Best Stim Free Pre Workout Ingredients?

Caffeine free pre workouts offer energy and focus through a variety of ingredients, such as natural nootropics. Although caffeine is the most well-known nootropic in the world, there are many other common nootropics for energy that are not “stimulants.”

From plant extracts to amino acids, there are many natural sources of energy that stimulant free pre workout supplements use.

As always, it is important to choose the products which work for you.

In my opinion, here are the best stimulant free pre workout ingredients that you should make sure are in the stim-free pre workout supplement you choose:

Citrulline Malate

Citrulline malate is one of the few dietary supplements which has clinical research to verify its benefits. In fact, multiple studies have proven the benefits of citrulline malate for improving workout performance.

According to one study produced in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning,

“We conclude that the use of CM might be useful to increase athletic performance in high-intensity anaerobic exercises with short rest times and to relieve post-exercise muscle soreness. Thus, athletes undergoing intensive preparation involving a high level of training or in competitive events might profit from CM.”

When you use citrulline malate before your workouts, you will notice benefits such as:

  • A Bigger Muscle “Pump”

I suggest that you look for a stim free pre workout that contains about 3-6 grams of citrulline malate.

Beta Alanine

Another clinically researched ingredient is beta alanine, and this is an even lesser-known pre workout supplement ingredient.

The primary role of beta alanine is to improve your workout capacity. Beta alanine works by creating a buffer that slows down the build-up of lactic acid, helping your muscles perform normally for longer.

According to a study produced in The Official Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine,

“Supplementation with β-alanine has been shown to increase muscle carnosine content and therefore total muscle buffer capacity, with the potential to elicit improvements in physical performance during high-intensity exercise. Studies on β-alanine supplementation and exercise performance have demonstrated improvements in performance during multiple bouts of high-intensity exercise and in single bouts of exercise lasting more than 60 s.”

For beta alanine, the best possible dosage is ~3.2grams per day, taken over the course of small dosages throughout the day. Personally, I have found the best results when I can take 4 doses of 800mg of beta alanine per day.

Beta alanine also works synergistically with creatine monohydrate, one of the other top stim free pre workout ingredients on my list!

Creatine Monohydrate

Of all the caffeine-free pre workout product ingredients, creatine monohydrate is probably the most well-known. Creatine monohydrate is another workout capacity enhancer, and it also plays a tremendous role in helping you build more lean muscle mass.

The main role of creatine monohydrate is to draw more water into your cells, which provides you with greater strength and endurance overall.

If you are only getting your creatine monohydrate in your daily pre workout product, your pre workout should include at least 5 grams of creatine monohydrate.

However, some people prefer to begin with a “loading” phase of up to 25 grams of creatine monohydrate per day for the first week.

According to one study produced in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association,

“One week of creatine supplementation (25 g/day) enhances muscular performance during repeated sets of bench press and jump squat exercise.”

Although there are other forms of creatine, I only use creatine monohydrate because it is well-researched and effective.


BCAAs are vital to your stimulant-free pre workout supplement because they provide your body with easily accessible sustained energy. BCAAs provide quick fuel for your muscles, while also providing a lasting fuel source for your body overall.

Drinking BCAAs before your workout will help improve your muscle recovery time and also help you train more intensely without becoming fatigued.

According to a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition,

“Research on branched chain amino acids (BCAA) has concluded that supplementation can result in increased protein synthesis and additional lean body mass in multiple populations. BCAA have also been shown to improve muscular strength as well as an increase thigh mass. Muscle damage has been markedly reduced after exercise and BCAA supplementation. Intake of BCAA, and leucine in particular, can create an anabolic environment by reducing protein oxidation and promoting sarcomerogenesis in skeletal muscle. The inclusion of BCAA before or after an exercise session will help the body maintain a positive nitrogen balance and support muscle growth.”

I suggest that you drink between 5 and 10 grams of BCAAs before your workout, so try to find a pre workout product that includes this much!
