Unfortunately, if you want to know how long does it take CBD oil to work for pain, there isn’t an exact scientific answer documented yet. However, from my own experiences and the experiences of others, as well as a quick look at the properties of CBD oil, we can draw some pretty clear conclusions.
For those of you who are completely new to the topic and don’t understand CBD oil at all yet, CBD oil comes from the cannabis plant. CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is known as a cannabinoid. There are numerous cannabinoids on the cannabis plant, but the most well-known are CBD and THC.
Unlike the cannabinoid THC, CBD does not cause a “high” or any psychoactive effects.
However, there are many proposed and documented potential medical benefits of CBD oil.
Although there are a wide variety of potential uses for CBD oil, one of the most commonly noted applications is pain relief. I have personally used CBD oil in multiple forms for pain relief, and it was an instrumental part of recovering from a spinal fracture I suffered in October of 2017.
Before you understand how long it takes to CBD oil to work for pain, you first need to consider which method you will use for consuming CBD oil.
The four distinct types of CBD consumption are:
- Inhalation (Vape)
- Sublingual Drops (Tincture)
- Ingestion (Edibles, Water, etc.)
Before CBD can benefit your body and help relieve pain, it first must be absorbed into our bloodstream. Once the CBD enters the bloodstream, it is then distributed throughout your indigenous Endocannabinoid System.
Aside from the consumption method, other factors which affect how long it takes for CBD to help relieve pain include:
- The Quality of the CBD Product
- Type of CBD
- Your Body Weight
- Basal Metabolic Rate
- Body Composition (BMI/Body Fat %)
Inhalation is the quickest form of absorption, while ingestion or topical application will take the most time for pain relief.
Keep reading below to find out more about how long it takes for CBD oil to work for pain from each form of absorption, along with a few of my favorite CBD products!
How Long Does it Take for CBD Oil from Inhalation to Work for Pain?
As I said before, inhalation is the quickest method of CBD pain relief.
To inhale CBD, you can use either a vaporizer or an inhaler with CBD oil. Effects usually appear significantly within 10-20-minutes, although it is possible that you will feel effects within moments.
CBD oil form inhalation is absorbed from your lungs to the bloodstream, which is why it is much quicker than other methods.
However, inhaling CBD is my least favorite option overall. Although it is quick and effective, it is relatively harsh. In fact, I’ve only found two brands who make CBD vape products which I can consistently use.
If you would like to try a CBD vape product, my favorite products are:
How Long for CBD Sublingual Drops (CBD Tincture) to Work for Pain?
Although it does not work exactly as fast, using a CBD tincture with sublingual drops works quickly and is not nearly as harsh as vaping CBD.
Sublingual CBD products are absorbed into the veins under your tongue, and they enter your bloodstream at a rapid rate. The best way to use this product is to hold the CBD oil underneath your tongue for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing, which helps the product to absorb quicker and better.
One of the main factors for how quickly you will notice the pain relief benefits of a CBD tincture product is the quality of the product. If you have a CBD tincture with nanotechnology or high-quality full-spectrum CBD oil, you will notice the effects quicker.
Personally, my favorite CBD tincture product is from Phytologica.
When I use the Phytologica tincture, I feel the effects within about 10-minutes, and they last for multiple hours. However, with lower quality products or CBD isolate, the effects take closer to 20 or 30 minutes for me to notice.
How Long Does it Take Ingestible CBD Products to Work for Pain?
If you want slow digesting but long-lasting effects, you should use ingestible CBD products.
Ingestible CBD products usually take over 30 minutes to begin working from my experience, since they must be digested through your entire digestive system first. However, the effects last longer than any other product.
Be wary of ingestible products which aren’t actually healthy for you. There is no point in using expensive CBD products to improve your health if you are eating sugary candies or gummies all day.
There are tons of ingestible CBD products out there, so I just suggest you search around until you find a product you like the best!
How Long Does it Take for Topical CBD Products to Work for Pain?
Depending on the ingredients in the product you are using, topical CBD products can work immediately, or they can work by compounding over time.
For the most part, all topical CBD products will provide some type of immediate relief. If you use a CBD product with menthol, camphor, or capsaicin (which has instantaneous heating or cooling effects), you will notice a more significant difference directly after using the product.
However, in my opinion, the mark of a truly good topical CBD product is that you feel better day by day.
Topical CBD products must penetrate through the skin, and I believe their primary purpose should be to alleviate substantial amounts of inflammation in problematic areas.
For topical CBD products, my favorite brands are:
Concluding Thoughts – How Long Does it Take for CBD Oil to Work for Pain?
As you can see, this is a complicated question. However, the answers are simple as well.
If you always need immediate relief, you should look for the best CBD vape possible and use it whenever you need.
Personally, I use sublingual CBD the most, followed by various forms of ingestible and topical CBD. If you have problems with chronic pain due to inflammation in muscles, joints, etc., topical CBD is a great long-term option as well.
I hope that this clears up some of your confusion over how long it will take CBD oil products to help relieve pain for you!
