Planning an RV or car camping trip and you’re wondering how to stay fit while on vacation?
Pack up your sports shoes and your bike, and follow these 8 tips to stay in shape, even on vacation!
1.) Strengthen Your Muscles in the Car
Do you have to drive long distances? Take the opportunity to do muscle exercises while sitting in the your car or RV. For example, start by contracting your abs, raise one foot at a time while keeping your leg bent at 90°C.
Keep the position for a few seconds before releasing, then repeat for 2 or 3 sets. Another good exercise is to keep your back straight and to contract your glutes for 20 seconds with 2 or 3 seconds of rest in between each set.
2.) Plan a Variety of Sports Activities
Try to include as many sports activities as possible on your vacation. Go on a bike ride, take an afternoon to hike or climb a mountain. Look around your campsite to find out if there are places where you can go canoeing, kayaking or even fly-fishing.
Use a yoga mat to do lower body and core workouts, and to stretch. In addition to keeping you fit, sports activities will allow you to visit new places and see beautiful landscapes.
3.) Eat Like You Would at Home
Being out in the woods doesn’t mean you have to live on hot-dogs and s’mores. Thinking about what’s on your plate is the basis of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. An unbalanced diet, even for a short period can affect your fitness, sleep and immune system.
On vacation, it’s often easy to succumb to junk food. Without completely depriving yourself (you are on vacation after all!), try not to eat more than two fast-food meals on the same day. Instead, go for healthy choices, such as salads or fish with vegetables.
For snacks, arm yourself with dried fruit, nuts and granola bars to always have a healthy option on hand.
4.) Don’t Underestimate the Power of the Grill
A BBQ feast doesn’t have to rhyme exclusively with meat. You can prepare a delicious grilled fish directly on the grill or cook it in foil with fresh veggies.
If you’re not sure if there are barbecues available at the campground you are visiting, bring your own portable gas grill, this way you will be able to have hot and healthy meals wherever you are in the woods.
5.) Visit the Local Market
Markets are full of fruit and vegetables from small producers. It is also a good opportunity to discover the region.
6.) Drink a lot of Water
It’s easy to get dehydrated under the sun. Dehydration can cause dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea and in the most severe cases, death. This is a good enough reason to always have a full bottle on hand.
7.) Make a Habit of Walking Everywhere
When you have to move around the campsite, rather than using the car or the golf cart, make a habit of walking. Whether to empty garbage cans or to go to different points of service, all opportunities are good to take a nice walk.
After all, there is no point in being in a hurry when you’re on vacation.

8.) Go to Bed Early
If you’re active all day, chances are you will do this anyway. When you’re out camping you’re more inclined to live by the sun’s schedule. You’re more likely to go to bed earlier, wake up earlier, and have more energy.
Sleep has an effect on all of your body processes and can improve alertness and concentration. It can also strengthen your cardiovascular system and can reduce inflammation.
Being active and keeping a good physical shape doesn’t have to be a challenge when you’re out camping and traveling by car or an RV. A little planning goes a long way.
You will sleep better at night and will feel more energized during the day. In saying this, do not forget to rest between your various sports activities, because vacations are also made to relax!
