Odd Hours: How to Keep Up a Fitness Routine with a Changing Schedule

Odd Hours: How to Keep Up a Fitness Routine with a Changing Schedule

If you have a busy or changing schedule, it’s hard to find time to get yourself to the gym.

Not to mention, lack of motivation from endless work hours or from an ever-changing schedule. Working nights, late hours, or moving from one semester schedule to the next can mean keeping irregular hours and cutting gym or fitness classes every time there’s a switch up.

To help you workaholics get the exercise you need, follow our tips below.

Make the Gym a Priority

If you don’t spend time on your own health, expect to get sick. If you can make time to spend at work all day, you can take an hour to two a day off to focus on your health and general fitness.

If you don’t make regularly going to the gym a part of your life, it’ll never be. Write it in a planner, or keep a schedule handy for your local gym hours.

When you keep your priorities fresh in your mind, it’s harder to forget them.

Be Realistic with Your Goals

The key to keeping up with a fitness routine is consistency.

If you go to the gym to workout, make sure you don’t sign up for too many classes all at once. Setting up too many workout sessions with a hectic schedule will only discourage yourself and anger your trainer.

Instead, set small, realistic goals that you’ll be able to complete.

Try Shorter Workouts

Often because people have busy schedules, they think that they need to train longer to make up for lost time.

However, this isn’t always the case. Recent studies have shown that even working out for 5-15 minutes is just as beneficial as a 90-minute workout.

Watch What You Eat

One of the most important parts of your health and wellbeing is your nutrition.

If you work late at night and eat nothing but donuts and soda, you’re not exactly going to want to go to the gym once your shift ends.

Eating right will help your body perform better in the gym and prevent you from wanting to miss a workout session. Eating healthier will also help you develop an improved state of mind and better overall health.

Be Prepared for the Gym

Before you leave for work, pack a gym bag for when you clock out.

This way, you can head right to the gym without any interruptions, which may cause you to not go at all.

Time Your Workouts

If your schedule changes frequently, you can use the energizing power of exercise to your advantage. Start your day with a long jog and see how much more energy you have to power through the rest of your work.

Doing this can help your body to feel normal and keep your body clock on a good routine.

If you find you get bogged down doing online classes at home, break up the day by doing a fitness routine in the middle. This can keep your mind fresh while you work in your workout.

Enjoy Empty Gyms

Working odd hours can actually work in your favor when it comes to going to the gym.

If you visit during off-hours, you can beat the crowds and easily use any machine you want.

There is no need to wait for the equipment you need. Additionally, the trainers will likely be free to help you and answer your questions.

Incorporate Fitness into Your Daily Routine

Take the stairs instead of the elevator, or park further from the door and walk to your destination. Even small changes like these can make a huge difference in your fitness levels as they add up over the course of a week.

If you live close enough to your work, consider walking or biking to work. Turn this into a regular habit. Just make sure you wear a helmet.

Maintaining a fitness routine can seem impossible if you work strange hours and have a frequently changing schedule.

However, it is not impossible. With these tips, it is easy to keep up your routine and stay fit at the same time.

  • Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae, Greece.
Wow! This place was enormous.. Today was the last of a 3-day break we have, and we picked a perfect place to visit! It was nice to learn some history of the Greek god Apollo as well.
Seeing as it’s Earth Day, I had to share one photo we took while driving to the temple. The picture doesn’t do it justice, but I had to try!

  • Today we visited the Temple of Apollo Epikourios. It took us ~2 hours to drive up through the mountains to get to the temple, but the ride was beautiful! Unfortunately, we hit some traffic on the way back down the mountain! hahaha

  • Ancient Elis, Greece.
In Greek Antiquity this was one of the largest cities in Greece. Although the Ancient city is just ruins now, you can still feel the aura every step! One of the biggest contributions of this ancient city was that the Olympic Games were “planned” here, and athletes from across the world gathered here before the original Olympic Games were officially hosted in Olympia. •

  • Katakolon, Greece.
The town itself you can pretty much see in its entirety on my 2nd photo. @Anna_Targoniy and I spent about an hour just sitting by the sea, and watching the water and the people fishing off the docks. There are some great wine/olive tours here that we didn’t do, but it was still an amazing place to see!

  • Today @Anna_Targoniy and I visited Katakolon, Greece.

Later I will post some other photos from this amazing little town, but I was so excited I had to post this first 😂 @olybeea.gr is by far the best honey I’ve ever had in my life! I’ve ate local New York honey forever, but this was just a whole different level! Also they have an incredible “mantra” about the connection between bees, honey, and life in general that I think is great. •
Katakolon is a high-traffic port for excursions in the Mediterranean so if anyone happens to come through here, I highly recommend you check out their shop! Personally, I’m excited to go back and try their Royal Jelly and other honey products!!
