For those who have heard about CBD (cannabidiol) and are considering using it, there are probably a ton of questions in your mind regarding its effects, safety, and capabilities. One of those common questions about CBD products is, “does CBD oil cause weight gain?

So, in this article, my goal is to outline exactly how taking CBD relates to weight gain and weight loss.

CBD oil interacts with the Endocannabinoid system, a series of receptor sites located in the immune system, the nervous system, and the brain. Because of this, CBD can impact everything from sleep to immune response, to mood.

In most cases, you can use CBD oil for weight loss because it supports your overall physical and mental health, and for many people, it helps promote a stable appetite. Although the “other” famous cannabis compound THC is well-known for increasing people’s appetite, CBD does not have this powerful effect, and CBD can help you lose weight by helping your body better understand when it is full and when it needs to eat.

As I mentioned before, you can use CBD for weight loss because it has effects that can help stabilize your appetite. CBD will not dramatically increase your metabolism, it will not help you lose weight if you are consuming an unhealthy diet, and it will not force you to exercise to burn more calories.

However, according to recent studies, CBD can produce significant positive effects on weight loss.

According to a study published in Neuroscience Letters,

“The results suggest that CBD has the ability to alter body weight gain, possibly via the CB2 receptor. CB2 receptors may play a role in the regulation of body weight and the effects of CB2 specific ligands should be further investigated in studies of body weight regulation.”

How Does CBD Oil Help You Lose Weight?

The reason you can use CBD for weight loss is that it works with the Endocannabinoid system of the body, which has been associated with playing a key role when it comes to regulating the body’s energy or calorie balance.

Here are a couple of specific ways in which CBD assists with healthy weight loss.

Regulating the Metabolism of Nutrients

It has also been shown to help regulate the body’s metabolism of fat and carbohydrates.

The cannabis network that CBD interacts with within the body is comprised of fatty acid-based chemicals, metabolic enzymes, and receptors. When people ingest CBD, it interacts with this system by decreasing fat cell generation, boosting mitochondrial activity, and increase the breakdown of fat.

Additionally, CBD oil has shown to be helpful for weight loss through a process known as “fat browning.” When someone ingests CBD, the body allows the CBD to turn white adipose tissue, which stores energy, into brown adipose tissue, which burns energy.

This process may also boost the body’s glucose tolerance, thus protecting people against diabetes and other metabolic conditions. Meaning, CBD can have a legitimate impact on metabolism and the body’s caloric storage.

Furthermore, CBD activates body receptors such as vanilloid, serotonin, and adenosine. Activation of these receptors leads to many, different health benefits, including improved energy balance (weight).

It also stimulates the body into releasing dopamine and glutamate.

Moreover, once CBD gets into your body, it blocks CPR55 signaling (mostly found in the brain) hence decreasing your blood pressure, bone re-absorption, and cancer cell proliferation.

Additionally, CBD also activates the cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). CB1 receptors are mostly present in the body’s central nervous system such as the kidneys, lungs, and liver.

They influence the production and release of neurotransmitters that in turn help your body maintain homeostasis, helping in the lipogenesis process (in the liver), and influence factors such as memory, pain tolerance, pleasure, and concentration. CB2 receptors help in immune-related functions such as immune suppression and apoptosis.


Lastly, as I mentioned before, most CBD users don’t experience the cravings associated with marijuana-use because THC is mostly responsible for the cravings. THC has psychoactive side effects like the munchies. Since CBD oil only contains trace amounts of THC, it does not promote cravings while taking it.
