After a summer where I felt like I was relying on caffeine and pre-workout products too much, I used ashwagandha for a short time in an attempt to relieve my adrenal system and scale back my caffeine consumption. I was more surprised than you could believe!
Ashwagandha was excellent for this, and it also improved my sleep tremendously.
According to a study published in the International Journal of Crude Drug Research,
“Withania somnifera, herbal rejuvenative tonic widely used by Ayurvedic physicians in India, was tested for its adaptogenic properties. Pretreatment with this drug increased the swimming endurance in mice. It prevented gastric ulcers induced chemically or by stress in rats. Milk-induced leucocytosis was also prevented in mice. The drug prevented increase in adrenal weight and decrease in ascorbic acid and Cortisol content of adrenals during stress. It appears to induce a state of non-specifically increased resistance (SNIR) during stress.”

The most famous medicine to come from Ayurvedic Medicine is undoubtedly turmeric. Turmeric (curcumin) has become a common dietary supplement, and even people in Western Cultures have begun to understand the various health benefits of turmeric.
According to a study on the impact of turmeric on anxiety and depression in obese people that was published in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine,
“Curcumin has a potential anti-anxiety effect in individuals with obesity.”

“Findings indicate that Abhyanga massage is promising in reducing subjective stress experience. It may be beneficial in lowering Heart Rate (HR) in all, and Blood Pressure (BP) in prehypertensive subjects.”
Regardless of which type of massage you receive, massages are an excellent addition to any stress management regiment.
Of all the aspects of Ayurvedic medicine which can help you manage stress, the most prominent in my opinion is yoga. I practice yoga nearly every day, and most of the time I actually practice yoga twice per day.
I have found that practicing yoga is one of the only ways I can relieve the motor tics I have that are caused by Tourette’s Syndrome.
When I don’t practice yoga for a few days, I notice that my tics quickly get worse and my mind becomes much more active (not in a good way) each day.

“Yoga, developed thousands of years ago, is recognized as a form of mind-body medicine. In yoga, physical postures and breathing exercises improve muscle strength, flexibility, blood circulation and oxygen uptake as well as hormone function. In addition, the relaxation induced by meditation helps to stabilize the autonomic nervous system with a tendency towards parasympathetic dominance.”
