If you are an obese person, then losing weight will likely be at the top of your priorities, and though many surgical procedures exist, gastric bypass surgery is something you must definitely look into.

The procedure aims to make the stomach smaller and also reroutes the intestines. As a result, you will feel full even while eating less food than you normally did.

Along with DIY coolsculpting, gastric bypass surgery is one of the best ways to lose fat fast.

Below, we look at six things about gastric bypass surgery you should definitely know about.

Fast Weight Loss

With a gastric bypass, you are giving yourself an excellent opportunity to lose weight fast.

At about 3 months, you will have lost about 30% of your excess weight.

By the time you reach the end of the first year of the surgery, about 65% of the excess weight would have been gone. As such, this is a very safe procedure for people looking to reduce their weight within a span of a year without having to engage in intense workouts.

Long Lasting Benefit

The surgery offers a long-lasting solution for obesity. In fact, a study reported that patients who had done a gastric bypass maintained a 27% weight loss even after 12 years of the surgery. They weighed 35 kg less than they did before the surgery twelve years back.

Diabetes Remission

For obese patients suffering from Type 2 diabetes, gastric bypass helps them in both areas.

Type 2 Diabetes is difficult to control for many people.

Doing a gastric bypass has been shown to allow patients remain free from insulin and other medication for a period of at least three years from the date of the surgery, and in the previous study, it was shown that the patients were completely free from type 2 diabetes even after 12 years of the surgery.

Qualification

In order to qualify for the gastric surgery, you must be classified as obese as per the standards set by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that you need to have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more.

If the BMI is less than 30, then the surgeon will generally not recommend the procedure.

Side Effects

You may experience some side effects including dental problems, issues with digestion, sagging skin due to weight loss, hair loss etc. But all these are only temporary and will pass away as soon as you recover from the operation.

Recovery Period

You will generally stay at the hospital for about 2 to 3 days and will be required to be away from work for about 3 weeks. You can expect to be fully recovered from the surgery in about 6 weeks.

So, if you are looking for a long-lasting weight loss solution, then gastric bypass is definitely a good choice. And to know more about how the procedure can specifically help you lose weight, you can check out Bay Bariatrics at for more information.
